hey everyone just curious I am thinking about getting a new eheim filter for my 220 to polish the water and compliment my wet/dry sump filter. For this purpose would the pro 3 or the 3e be a better choice. The regular pro 3 is rated for larger tanks but the 3e has all those fancy options.. what do you think?

will those electronic timer/output options be of any use to you? If not, i'd go for the pro3. One less thing to go wrong :p

For polishing the water the 3e will be a much better choice. You have not only the ability to use it for massive bio filtration, but also for a good mech filter as well. The pro 3 is a great bio filter, but lacks in the mech arena. A simple pair of hydro sponge filters will make it leagues better, but as is the 3e line is much better.

good point... Also I should throw the fx5 into the line up but I am worried about the high flow rate. I already have 1000gph from my wet/dry pump.

If you simply add 50 or 100 micron filter felt to the Pro3 it polishes the water...can`t comment on the 3e as I don`t have one.

i don't see how the 3e is a better mechanical filter than the 3. It's turn over is less, has a smaller filter volume and pre filter (8.6 litres compared to 13.5 litres on the 3). Also the 3 has 2 inlet pipes compared to just the 1 i believe on the 3e. Stick 1 inlet at each corner of the tank, and already you got an advantage in getting to dead corners than the 3e.

When it comes down to it, all a cannister filter is is a pump in a sealed tub. The 3 will cycle more water through it per an hour than the 3e and filter the water through more media. If you got bio filtration covered with another filter, you can add more floss in the 3 to really sieve the water.

Your information is incorrect. The pro 3e 2078 runs 490 gph to the 2080's 450 gph. The 2080 is only designed to be a bio filter, and has no settings to help it perform mechanical filtration. The 2076 and 2078 both have a 12 hour bio/mech setting specifically designed for this task. I can say 100% that the pro 3e 2078 is a much better mech filter than its predecessor. I own both filters, and have seen both in operation.
