I just recently upgraded to the Pro 3e 2078 and seem to have alot of floaties and skim on the water. I run the 2078 for only mechanical and the 2229 for my biological. Previously I ran the FX5 for my mechanical and didn't have the floaties, or oily surface that I have now. I currently have the Eheim Installation set 2 for both of my filters the 2078 one is on the left wall making a current all the way down and the 2229 is on the back wall on the right side shooting towards the front. My intakes are on the left side about 4-5" above my sand substrate. With the FX5 it had tons of current and would keep the tank pristine clear. The fish seem to like the new current as they don't have to swim so hard and they use the entire tank as with the FX5 they mostly stayed at the bottom. Is their anything I can add to help the water out? Maybe some plants? I miss the super clear water that I had previously. Should I move my returns to one side and the intakes to the other side? Hows is everyone else set up? Sorry for the long post.

The oily residue is a protein, that builds up. A little surface agitation will take care of it. I run my spray bar straight across the top 3" below the water surface. The intake is directly below this, and I have a rio HF10 on the opposite end of the tank blowing across the bottom. I have had no problems with clarity using this setup.

WyldFya, Here are a few pics of my setup. My 2078 spray bar is only about 1" below the water shooting across but doesn't aggitate all the way across. Let me know what you think.

Oh yeah I need to put my other link back onto the 2229 intake as I had the prefilter off and didn't want it to suck up any sand.

Well it should be fine. Instead of the white foam, try getting a Hydro sponge. The hydro sponges are much tighter formation.

Sure will look. Hydro sponge 3? The ones I have were designed for the 2229 and seemed to work good. I also removed the ehfisynth from the 2078 for now as i seemed to really kill the flow of this filter. Maybe I should just leave it alone for a couple of days and do a good water change on the tank tomorrow. Atleast the fish seem good and happy. Now to find someone intrested in the FX5.

Thanks for your help.

WyldFya- What is your input on tying 2 returns from 2 2078 3E together to one spray bar or setting it up in a horseshoe look with 2 eheim kits? I love the stream output but am thinking with 2 I could get a unique flow and cut down on the few floaties still around. The fish love it though.

My pro 3 is actually setup with a big U in the spray bar, and it slows the flow, but enables a lot of surface agitation. This seems to work really well, as I have no floaties in that tank.

You wouldn't happen to have any pics of your setup would you? :D Trying to get a bit more aggitation might look at adding another 2078 and another spray bar below the one in the tank now. Now to figure out how to do video on my camera to post a bit of the new setup. Thanks for all your insight.
