Do the Eheim Pro 3 come with the media or is that extra?

Priming all eheims, all canisters for that matter, is much easier if you don't use the primer. I always just fill the lines, and open the valves.

That is correct. Many of the larger canisters will not come with media. Eheim's are not cheap filters, and their cost reflects their quality. Expect to pay $500 for the filter and media all total.
