I have a Eheim Pro 3 2180 on a 240 but the flow rate seems to be very slow, the flow indicator only stays about a quarter the way up, what could be the problem?? its quite a new filter and only been set up a month or so.:nilly:

Do you have any flat points, curves upwards, or loops in the tubes? How full did you pack the filter with media? How tall is the tank?

the intake tube from the left side of the tank goes straight across for about 1.5 m after it goes down and the right side intake tube just goes straight down to the filter. the output tube from the filter goes straight up then across to the spray bar in the tank. all tubing is above the filter height. even when this filter was on my other tank with shorter tubes the flow rate was the same as it is now.

The filter is packed with 1 complete Eheim 2080 media set which is if i remember correctly 4 litres of efhimech and 8 litres of substrat pro. This is what i originally thought may be the problem, so i tried taking the media out for a minute and running it empty but the flow rate still stays more or less the same.

Finally, the top of the tank is approx 4ft off the ground, about 2ft higher than the top of the filter, although the 2180 should work fine up to 6ft from the base of the filter according to the manual..

any ideas what else it could be? need to get filtration properly sorted before stocking the tank any more

did it ever run properly? how long has this been happening?

check out the impeller, make sure it is freely spinning (its probably not that, fouled impellers usually make a noise)

can u blow air thew the hoses?

I would unload the filter media and try and run the filter with out any media in it just to see if it works (this seems like the most likely culprit, could be that a filter pad has clogged up an intake or outflow)

I own 4 eheims they work great

You've eliminated the media as the problem by leaving it out and running it. before I got too frisky with this I'd use a seperate in-line flow meter and compare readings You said that the reading didn't change AT ALL when you took out all of the media and to be honest thats impossible with any cannister filter. My thaught in all of this is that it's not actully your cannister that's the problem but rather your guage.

well when i said "didnt change at all" i meant nothing significant, runs very slightly faster with no media but not much faster

did it ever run properly? how long has this been happening?

and no its never run properly, been happening since new (only a month old)

also how much will the actual filtration of the tank be affected by a reduced flow rate? does it affect it alot or not too much?

A slower flow rate will actully increase the Bio-capacity of the filter by allowing a longer contact time. So in this respect it's not a bad thing. It can also do a good job of filtering the water. Additionally cannisters with a larger diamiter hose like the FX5 and the larger Eheims move a LOT of water without seeming to have much pressure at the outlet. About the only way to know for sure if it's the unit is to compare it with another identical cannister set up the same way. This is another reason that I run many of the same type of filters rather than an assortment. Spray bars...by the way have a tendancy to slow down the flow rate when compared to a direct outlet because of the greater back pressure.

So would it be best to convert this filter to purely biological and get a couple of FX5's or Eheim 2080's for mechanical? as i'll have to upgrade filtration when fish stock increases anyway
