well I got my eheim 2260 and it is flippin huge!! but anyways I bought ehfimec, ehfisynth, and ehfifix. Do I really need to get the substrat for my biological? It is so freakin expensive I would rather use something else if possible. this is for my 125 right now which already has 2 penguin 400's. Just curios if not I guess I'll just have to shell out another 30-50 dollars:irked:

Thanks in advance

You can use whatever bio media you want. The substrat pro is great stuff. When you bought your filter you should have gotten some with it. When you buy the filter, and a media package at once you get better deals on the Eheim medias.

I was gonna get the 2260 but I realized that the efisubstrat was gonna be like another 150+ so I just got a classic 2217 that came with medial.

well to be honest with you my feeling was that since it holds so much media and it says it is rated up to a 400 gallon tank at least that's what the website I bought it from said. That I could use something cheaper and be fine since it is only on a 125 which already has the two penguin 400's. I was just wondering if other biological medias would suffice. I guess not though since nobody has any ideas.

You could use cheap biomedia, but like someone posted above, why put 87 octane in a new corvette.

I would never use another media since I've discovered Eheims. No matter what the price.

agree with tb, youve spend a small fortune on the filter, why save money on the media. substrat pro is superb stuff and well worth the money. but some sort of filterdeal/pack, its cheaper.

For all those that think that Substrat pro is amazing, go to fosters and smith and buy a 1" slab of Cell pore. That stuff is the most porous material I have ever seen.

Howdy,

Matter of fact is that EhFiSubstrat pro is the best biomedia for that filter. As compared to other media, it was designed keeping optimal flow rate in a canister filter in mind. Cell pore does not seem to be optimized for that application.

On the other hand, in pre-sintered-glass-media-ages, filters were stocked with regular ceramic rings and it worked just fine. I never had any problems even back in these old days. Does it work? yes. Is it the very best our hobby has to offer? no. Would I personally ever go back to ceramic rings only? no.

I like the Corvette analogy.

thanks for the info, especially HarleyK. It's not that I'm totally against getting the expensive stuff I just wanted actual reasoning as to wether or not it was worth the money. Just to bad I didn't order it at the same time :irked: Oh well everyone screws up at some point or another.
