My understanding is that the scintered glass stones/pebbles from Eheim, after a period of time, need to be replaced because they loses their ability to colonize bacteria and/or water can no longer pass through them as easily, which severly cuts your flow rate. Replacing bio media is unacceptable in my book.

I use Bio Max, which is a porous material but in the in the shape of a noodle. I never replace it. It's excellent. GBG

If they said you never need to replace it you'd never buy any more. Take some out every once in a while and rinse it, or better yet, soak it in tap water until the next time you clean it. Then when cleaning the media swap it out with some of the old stuff. You've now got a fresh growth area for your bacteria. Even if you did have to replace it with new, going back to the car thing, do you replace motor oil?? even if it's synthetic??

efimech is noodle-shaped. It's good stuff but doesn't approach the value of either efisubstrat or efisubstrat pro.
