ehh my friend got a black tip shark

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't doubt that the guy is telling the truth.

After all - think about how many LFS keep fish in tanks that are too small. Most serious aquarists have heard horror stories about LFS keeping swimming sharks like the Blacktip Reef in large display tanks that aren't suited to the size of the shark. And if a customer walks into one of those stores - they automatically assume that just because the Fish Shop is doing it - it most be okay. They don't realize that often times many LFS owners know virtually nothing about keeping Sharks in home aquaria.

And while there's sanctuaries that may take in some exotic "pets", but unfortunetly sharks usually aren't one of them.

Not that they'd survive all the stress. :(

yeah, we shouldn't give the guy posting the topic a hard time, by doing so, we're only alienating ourselves, and prventing others from learning.

i agree that these sharks should not be house in private aquarias, but in reality, they are being killed much more for the food industry, fisherman, sports fisherman, and by-catch fish nets.

in all honesty, as much as it is a shame that some sharks die from people who "attempt" to keep sharks ignorantly, there are many things much worse happening around us.

thanks for the shark information presented here, and hope that more people can learn from reading and have to make the mistake of keeping one.

Well - it's certainly possible to keep small requiem sharks like the blacktip reef in a private aquaria.

But it a special breed of aquarists to do it successfully. One who has the knowledge (who has lots of experience with sharks especially requiems) and has a large swimming pool size(say at least 20,000-30,000 gallons) shark lagoon so they can keep it for it's entire life span.

The problem is most people want to keep a shark like that - don't have the room or experience to do it right. And they tend to be too impatient to learn about keeping sharks they right way - thru reading, research, & experience for smaller, but hardier & more home aquaria friendly species, before attempting to keep a requiem.

So yeah - Requiem Sharks aren't fit for about 95-99% of most Aquarists to keep. Most people that seriously want to keep sharks - should only keep benthic species like bamboos, Eppies, coral cats or horns which are much better suited for large home aquaria (about 300-2,000 gallon range).

And the sad truth is many times more sharks are killed each year by fishing practices(such as finning, & sportfishing) than, are killed from being kept by inexperienced aquarists.

Like Big Al's tank? They have shark tank and I think they are requiem sharks, because they stay at the surface 100% of the time. Most of those tank, I dont think they even hit the 5000G mark..

Is that the perfect example of a home aquaria for keeping a requiem shark? ;)

At one of my not so average lfs you can actually buy some shark ;)

Im not sure if someone in here actually work in that place or not, but it doesnt seem hard enough to acquire a black tip reef shark or a nurse shark... The price is like fairly cheap, if you can afford an Asian Arowana, you can just buy one..

I wonder why people who want sharks don't just get dog fishes?. They raise them in ME for lab research in large tubs..And they are very shark-like ( if they are not a kind of shark?).
