Ok, here it goes, ive been wanting to put piranha in my empty 55 gallon tank for a while, and Whilst looking on aquascape online, i noticed that they have whats called a Eigenmanni piranha, and that they only get about 6" tp 8". I was thinking that i could probobly house a pair of them in my tank for atleast half a year until i can buy a bigger tank...

What do you guys (and girls) think?

Btw, i have kept redbellies before, and i didnt like them very much because they were always so skittish, and would never take live food....

Thanks for your time

That's a solitary fish. I believe that most (if not all) of the fish in the Serrasalmus genus should be kept alone.

Do you own one? If so, could you post pics of your tank? Are there any better smaller piranha that are aggressive?

They are a solitary fish? What do they do in the wild? Be loners?

Aggressiveness depends on the individual fish IMO, not the genus/species. So you could get lucky and get a glass banger/finger chaser, or you could get one that is more skittish than your reds were.

Typically
the genus Serrasalmus is said to be more aggressive than Pygocentrus, but that is not always the case. Most of the Serrasalmus (including Eigenmanni) should be kept solo.

As to the second part of your ?, there is so much open water and room in the wild they just avoid other fish. They dont group or "shoal" together like the Pygocentrus species.

in therory you can cohab serra's but it not reccomeded in smaller aquaria, it has been done in larger tanks- depending on species.

Not many serras you could shoal at all. Spilo/Mac and Geryi are the only ones that I know of and worked.
I like the look of the Eigenmanni. Not too many about either Should make a lovely solo specimen.

thats one serra i think you could cohab... I had one for about a year and he never went above 5". a little skittish for just a lone fish but he looked great. almost a geryi like shine off of him.
i say don't get only 2. go for like 5-6 to start cause some will probably get killed. it might also be a good idea to have a hospital tank ready for any injuries.

Well, if they are going to get killed then why buy them. Ide rather just buy one instead of buying a couple, now that i know their gonna fight..
What is the least skittish species?
