Could a group of 6-7 yellow labs be kept in a 40 breeder? Asking for a friend. His tank has been idle for couple of months and now he wants to set it up. Can it be done ? Only yellow labs nothing else with some rockwork and java fern cause he has some of it left out from previous setup.
Thanks ✌

I think it would be possible. May be best to even add a couple more.

Tbh, that’s way overstocked.
True that I think I'll keep the stock to maybe 6 yellow labs cause any less won't be ideal to spread aggression and any more would be very overstocked ( not like those where there is no space left) .
But lets have some more members tune in .

You would be better off with smaller cichlids - shelldwellers would be cool
Wanted them but not available.
Only yellow labs, peacocks, convict, firemouth, blue acaras are the options available or else big ones like oscars severums or the small tetras. Nothing else.
If not yellow labs then a blood parrot with some tall bodied tetras, but yellow labs are his first priority

Blood parrots imo would be too big. Convicts would be best bet. Gymnogeophagus are a cool species. The less-rarer kind - Gymnogeophagus Balzanii would be cool.

With African cichlids it's honestly better to over stock then understock. An understocked tank has territories to stake claim to while in an over stocked tank there are no territories as everybody is in everybody else's space. It's actually a pretty common thing to see with African cichlid tanks as it helps to reduce aggression and the over all fry output. Granted you'll still get babies just not as frequently or in such quantity. Granted 6-7 is still not bad for only a 40g but you'll have em breeding more regularly then.
