Electric Blue Acaras

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine are great. They have plumped up a lot and they're extremely active. They will not hold still for anything. They're also pretty aggressive with each other, so I'll be glad when quarantine is over and I can move them to a larger tank.

What species are these? I want a blue colored fish and was considering Honduran red points but these are nice too

No one is sure. The logical guess would be Andinoacara pulcher but it's entirely possible they're a mix of closely related species. Without the body markings which are covered up by the blue color it's hard to tell. They do have a yellow-trimmed dorsal like A. pulcher but their shape is a little different and they are more aggressive with each other than I remember my blue acaras being.

A lot of people have them listed as A. pulcher but when I've contacted those vendors they admit that they're only guessing and they don't know for sure.

Here's an updated video. They've gained some weight in the three weeks I've had them. Just a week or two more and they'll go into a 55, then eventually a 150. The yellow stripe on the dorsal is really bright now. Unfortunately they're a bit washed out in the iPhone video.

Not usually a fan of line-bred morphs, but they're lovely fish, and if anything can stir people to keeping (Blue) Acara's I'm all for it. An underrated Cichlid due to their perceived popularity that are personable, reasonably peaceful, and gorgeous. Will always hold a place in my heart as my first ever fish (and pair, bred the day I picked them up).

Agreed, Japes. Of all my cichlids, my Acaras are my favorite.

Nice to see you back japes!!!

I need someone else to help carry the 'acaras are under rated' banner with me! I agree with you about drawing attention to the acaras via these as well. I still don't think they look as good as the natural phase, but maybe these will entice others.

I'm also a big fan of acaras - growing out some C. amazonarum and A. tetramerus from Rapps Brazil shipment at present.

Kinda meh on the electric blue ones, though. Yours look happy and healthy, though, Ryan!

I love acaras but I think for me it's more about the shape and the temperament. I like the chunky, stout look of acaras. Color always seems to take a backseat for me, which explains why I end up with a lot of what most would consider drab brown fish. I have always had a soft spot for the port types, and I still have things like Krobia guianensis which are not exactly flashy.

Being a discus keeper, the EB rams and acaras remind me a lot of Blue Diamond discus, so I have a soft spot for them. Though I do love a good traditional blue acara. I'm planning to mix these with orange head geos for a nice colorful living room display tank.
