electric blue dempsey mystery

hey stilllearnin, how are ya? :D

I'm not saying EBJD's aren't hybrid or that they are, but I would find it very hard to believe they came from a hybrid spawn of JD with either synspilum nor a jag. not saying that it's impossible though by any means.

:)

I'm alive (must count for something)

I tried not to state my oponion since this topic gets heated pretty often when it's brought up.

But, my look at the debate (and the facts as I know)

When orginally Jeff told me they were pure fish - I belived it.

but

the DNA tests done on blue dempseys did NOT compair them to synspilum or managuense (whole additional debate and I'm not a scientist) so it left alot of people wondering why, since those were the suspected hybrids then, even.

When there's people who passed up a chance to distribute them (before Jeff got them) who swear (what 10 years later) that they're hybrids and they toured the breeders place.

It makes me wonder - the following
Why would the orginal supplier lie? - the blue demps came out before the hybrid craze, the only thing they stood to do was loose money by declareing them hybrids at that time. ---- If they were proven not to be hybrids at some point in time, why is the updated version of their site, better with added pictures but still says they're hybrids?

Why would one of the most reputable people in the hobby (who collects lots of new and rarer cichlids for other hobbyist) say they're hybrids and that he toured the whole breeding operation ? Whats the gain? Lie about blue dempsey's being a hybrid , while collecting beani, asfraci, steindachneri, pantostictus and other fish for people in the hobby ?
Make up the lie and have enough people belive it to ban blue dempseys from a lot of shows , while trying to promote the hobby and make events bigger ?

That I would say is far less probable then Blue Dempsey's being hybrids.

Just my thoughts ;)

You have helped me out a ton!

Wish the site was in english.

If they were hybrids, when you bred an EBJD male to a female JD you'd likely get fish that displayed varying degrees of EB, like when we look at other fish that appear to be hybrids. But with jacks, an EB x normal spawn yields fish that are phenotypically normal jacks (but heterozygous for EB).

And yes, EBJD x normal JD spawn should yield 25% normal jack, 50% het for EB, 25% EBJD fry...though I suspect in reality that wouldn't be the case due to the relative hardiness of JD's vs. EBJD's. I'd love to hear from anyone completing such a spawning re: the percentage of viable EBJD fry they got as I imagine it would be well under 25%.

great points :grinno:

it was always my understanding that EBJDs were color morphs of JDs. "freaks of nature", like albinos and red heads (joking! I love red heads). anyway, I thought it was just a recessive gene. almost impossible to breed from two regular jacks, and difficult to breed from EBJDs.

this news that they are hybrids is disturbing...
