my lfs is selling these electric blue dempseys for 40 bucks...they are all around 1 -2 inches.......but ive heard that ELBJD's tend to die before 3 inches....should i worry about that or should i just buy one??

how long have they been there?I let the lfs feed mine for a month before I picked him up.make sure they are healthy, feeding well and from a reputable store.Other than that its a crapshoot, they are delicate fish.

If you are willing to take the chance of wasting $40 then id say go for it. Thats not too bad of a price for a petstore either.

They are delicate until 3". They can die at random and show no signs of illness. I have had a total of 9 at various times over the past 3 years and have had 4 die. it all depends on the fish and how its genetics are as well.

i don't think he wants a green texas.......i'd go in there every day or so and see how the fish are doing and how many he is selling.......if it looks like he isn't selling that many than i'd waite for them to grow in his tank and he can take the loss if they don't make it. if they are selling like hot cakes wich is very likely then i'd take a chance and snatch one up at a decent price but i would keep it in a 10gal seperate from the rest of your fish.

Yo GTBEAST did you ever end up gettin a gold saum from ol' jeff rapps??? and did ya make up your mind as to which you will go with the GT or JD???

He could want a jag for all you know.

I offered up a solution where he could have a fish just as stunning and good looking and not to worry about buying an overpriced EBJD and end up having it die like countless others on this forum have. For ever EBJD success story I see 4-5 others that have had them die. Sorry if I've jumped off that bandwagon. Lord knows I was on it myself for a good 3-4 months before reality kicked in. If you're gonna spend 40$ on ONE fish at such a size, it better come back with a money back guarantee as far as I am concerned. If he was dealing with a breeder and buying 4-5 of them then I'd say something different. He'd at least have a chance of having 1 survive out of 5. There's a few auctions on aquabid right now from at least one reputable breeder. I'd spend the little bit of extra money and get a bulk group of them rather than paying 1 extreme amount for 1 fish.

no, i didnt im still deciding between these three cichlids

I'd go for an escondido then a GT over a EBJD... but that's just me.

I know you've been talking about a GT for a LONG time now. I think you should send a PM to snookn21 and ask him to get some more GT's in.. they are about 6" or so last time.. get one or two of those stunners and have some fun. No sense not getting a fish that you want so bad, course that's just my opinion ;)

As for Escondido's.. this is the fish that made me want to have one and here is a video of him:

hands down go with an escondido or a gt. i could never justify getting a $65 (how much they go for around here) 1.5" fish that probably won't make it over 3".

ps. that video made me really want some clown loaches!
