I'm considering getting an electric blue dempsey. Does anyone have any advice about their behavior and tank requirements - especially compared to the regular Jack Dempsey (which I'm familiar with)? Are they difficult to find?

Requirementsa are the same as regular Dempsey's :) The only real difference is an extra gene :) And the don't get as big generally as Regular dempsey's:)

I've seen some beauties at about 5", don't know the max size. Certainly more docile than a normal jd, more sensitive too. Some have reported that they are more prone to disease.

I hope they get bigger than 5 inches! Geez! All the skittish, wimpy, shy, disease-prone, labels in this thread make me want to consider an African blue haplo! I love the JD's personality, so if the electric blues don't have it . . . . I guess there's more to life than good looks!

I had a couple a few years back, gave them there own 55 gallon with some small danios to grow them out in. They would do fine and eat well, then out of no where one died. I checked the water, everything was perfect, no signs of disease. Several months later I find the other one dead, same situation. Strange. And yes they are very timid and hide alot.

My EBJD lives with a pair of angels and some Bolivian rams.
The little guy is eating regular flake, blood worms and sopirulina. (Spiro everyday to boost immune.)
He is very active bosses around every one in the tank and swims like hell when i come into the room.
I guess it all depends of how far down the line of inbreeding your dempsey comes from, it's parents genes and what it is fed and housed with.
I also have noted that from 1.5 to 2.5 inches was at about the same rate as my reg. JD's.
My little guy cam from a place in So. Cal delived to Rhode Island.
