We're looking at getting an electric blue jack dempsey for our 180L (47.55 US Gallon/39.59 UK Gallon) Bow fronted tank. Just wondered if its big enough to have a tank mate in there? There will be a gibicep plec in with him, other than that nothing else. It's fluval viszensa drilled tank with a 206 as a filter at present so filtering shouldn't be an issue.

We both really love oscars but we're waiting till we move in the next year or too and get a proper big tank (100 Gallon+) as a 180L doesn't seem big enough to me to house an oscar! (previous experience of ending up with a 6x2x2 tank in the garage :-) )

You have the same problem as me, a "small" tank (I have a 55 gallon). I have some other stuff in with my EBJD in there but they will need a bigger tank in the future. Personally I wouldn't got with more than 1 more "small" cichlid. Like ehh said, a convict could work well.

Thats a maybe we had a breeding pair previously, would a female convict on her own possibly bully the ebjd? I know the're very boisterous in a par, would the female be a lot calmer?

Depends on your dimensions. While severums are less aggressive they get pretty big. It may be worth a shot but I'll let some one more well versed respond to that.

Maybe try one of the smaller acaras,or a keyhole.possibly something else similar to convict (sajica,HRP)

What is the size of the EBJD that you have or you are planning to have...if anything around 3 inches...then add one more EBJD as a tankmate....with some good hiding places and you should be good....

I'm planning on keeping the ebjd long term so wanted something that could grow with it but obviously not get too big for the tank or too aggresive being in fairly close quarters, thanks for the suggestions and sorry for the very late reply me and the mrs just started new jobs so its been a very busy few weeks, we both like the idea of a severum but don't want to be cruel, is there a size difference in severums is there one of the many varieties that tends to be smaller?
The dimensions copied from a web site are as follows
Volume: approx. 180 Litres
Aquarium Measurements: 92 cm L x 41 cm W x 55 cm H
Cabinet Measurements: 92 cm L x 41 cm W x 72 cm H
Overall Height of Aquarium and Cabinet 127cm
