Why don't you just put the EBJD in your 40 gallon now? Why wait? Is there something in the 40 you think will injure/kill/eat the EBJD? If not, I'd go ahead and put it in the 40g (assuming its an established/cycled tank).

edit: I have 2 small (about 2") EBJDs in a 125g, they seem very happy :D They were barely an inch when I got them almost 2 months ago.

Big Jon... with all due respect you are purchasing Cichlids that deserve MUCH larger tanks than you are supplying them with... I understand they are young/small now but they can grow very very quickly when kept in proper conditions. You will not see this though in the tiny tanks you are keeping them in...

Oscars grow faster than EBJDs. I'd guess that the time it takes your 1" EBJD to grow to 3", your Oscar will have grown from 3" to 7+". and if the tank is already on the small side, I'd assume there will be aggression between the Oscar / JD / EBJD (Oscar might even be big enough to eat EBJD still).

Just a thought...

The guy at your LFS was either incredibly ignorant, or he was pullin' your chain a bit because an EBJD is an EBJD.

And like these guys have said, you might want to do a little research before buying (*with all do respect) because those fish get big. I'm more referring to the Oscar..

Why does one of my EBJD have a long anal fin and the other three dont? is they are about an inch and a half long and one of them looks a lot more different.

In addition to clean water and good diet, the other way to keep them from getting sick is to not introduce any other new fish until the ebjd is 4" long. So many people get their baby ebjd's sick because they won't stop introducing additional fish that often carry disease.
