These guys have been in the states for about 2 years now. They are very sensitive and very expensive in the LFS. You can get them cheaper from online venders. We sell them for $25 each all year round. I have seen other venders selling them for $30. It all depends. Being they are so sensitive and expensive, be careful buying them from a LFS. Most LFS are on a central system, so just because the EBJD tank looks clean, dosen't mean the water is. Mr. Oscar a couple of tanks down may be chomping on a goldfish and sending all sorts of crap into the system. Good Luck growing them out.
I've seen them as far back as five years ago.

I'm surprised there are people out there still who never heard of blue jack dempsey. They are actullay getting much cheaper now (I can get a 1.5" juvie today for $15 locally, whereas a year ago they went for $25 minimum). These fish look spectacular as adults but are incredibly fragile and will often die for no apprent reason. After 2 failed attempts at starting BJD breeding projects I am actually tempted to try again... ;)
Third time is a charm. GL if you do decide to try again.

they are truly beautiful fish, but ive been afraid to get one because ive heard they are fragile-dont know if thats true or not.

back in '07' where this thread belongs (j/k :D ) two years ago is 2005, the same as five years ago today, is also 2005.

That was the first year I started seeing them.

Mel, back in 05 it seemed like they were barely starting to pop up more commonly.

1" juvies were going for $20!! So I'm guessing they were only begining to be farmed, and the genes were still weak because of the line-breeding to get the fully expressed phenotype.

Seems like recently they have become more resilient, and I"m guessing that farmers have added more genetic diversity to the breeding stock.

Especially when you see them for sale at 3" for $25, hopefully Rich gets more soon. They are a beautiful, large peaceful (for the most part) cichlid.

EBJD's more common today than years ago. I got mine two weeks ago for $8.99 and its only 4 inch long! Some of them are fragile but not always in this case. Once they are past 5 inch, its worth of it and will become your popular showy centerpiece fish.

I've kept them in the past with no success. They are beautiful fish but frustrating at the same time. They are fragile as others have said but I've also seen large EBJD's so there are hardy ones out there. I had 5 at different times. One died of aggression at 6" and the rest for no reason at 4" & 5" even with a UV sterilizer. I don't regret owning them though since they forced me into good habits like weekly water changes and checking parameters weekly.

Here's a couple of pics of my fallen EBJD's:

Hope they become a little hardier through good breeding practices, I'd love to pick some up in the future and try them again.

i can honestly say they are some of the most beautiful fish ive seen. at my lfs (the ONLY lfs in my town lol) they sometimes get them in. they sell them for 35 bucks a piece-a little steep for me.

ill wait a few years for the strain to perfect and price to drop then maybe someday get one..

God I never new they were fragile like... Truely amazing colors and they get to a good size! just hate when a fish you had for a few years then just dies... Id like to have one but I too will wait til they live longer.

They already have become a lot hardier. Rich at Infinite Aquatics brought in a ton of 3" juvies earlier this year and all of the ones I bought (four) grew fast and were very healthy.

They were a little more aggressive than the old weak strain, but still a great fish.
