I have (13) 3 inch clown loaches, and im thinking about adding 4 or 6 electric blue jack dempseys. The EBJDs Im planning to pick up are about 1.5 inches (small, but the blue is like a shinny foil blue color) Will the dempseys attack my loaches? The tank is about 40G, with about 2 small hiding spaces.

Note: My clowns come first before any other fishes, no matter now pretty they look.:naughty:

I think it will go the other way. The loaches will have there way with the JD's. Aren't the blues more fragile, that is what I have always heard. I never had any luck with them.

my god man, ive never complained about a tank stocking one time in my posts on MFK, 13 clowns in a 40g in insane, nevermind adding a bunch of EBJD. ya gotta learn to research your fish before you buy them. the tiny cute little fish you see now, may very well be 1-2-even 3 foot monsters before you know whats going on.

nevermind 40, your going to need a 400+ gallon tank for your 13 clown loaches alone. they can reach 6-12" long. either do a MAJOR tank upgrade, or you need to sell your fish and start over.

Loaches are slow growing, you do need a much bigger tank just for the loaches though, now. You won't beable to keep all those in a 40g. Those ebjd are some expensive fish, I wouldn't get so many maybe try one or two and see how it goes. But you do have way to many loaches. 13? so forget the ebjds for now.

I agree, although I think some of the others overreacted a little. Upgrade the tank, then think about other fish. When I was first getting into fishkeeping, I shied away from clowns because all I heard was how huge they got, but no one really mentioned that it takes like 15 years. 13 3"ers in a 40 gallon is a little much, so definitely get a bigger tank (I'd say at least in the 75-100 gallon range) before you consider tankmates. Eventually, you'll either want to get them at least a 180, or maybe sell a few to reduce the pack size if you don't want to get quite that big of a tank.

youll need a larger tank and i think you would need to worry about the ebjd more than the clown loaches

Do you plan to get rid of the EBJDs once they grow? The 40g would be overcrowded already. Juvenile EBJDs aren't a problem.

should be fine for a while. Those clowns take forever to grow but the EBJD will grow up to 12 inches. Maybe for a few months but not for a long time.
