I recently bought 3 electric blues this past weekend. The local fish man couldn't tell me if they were females or males. Without actual venting, is there any observations that I could make to better guess what they are?

All three look very similiar and are a solid blue. I'll post pics later, possibly even today...

If anyone has some pictures of known to be female or male species please share.

Thanks,

You have all males. The Sciaenochromis fryeri (electric blue) females are just brownish. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/s_fryeri.php

They have these at my local fish store but they are too small to tell which are males. I REALLY want one of these but am not going to risk dropping a fem in with all my males...

I'll try to post some pics of mine tonight. They are fairly large (2 1/2 inches) if that is considered large.

nope, that is very small (they get to be ~7 inches). And as I said if they are blue=male.

electric blue JD?

I agree with the above Blue is male and Females are dirt brown, you got to really look at EB in the Stores as wells. 1 I never seen or have I found a female in a LFS because they are brown they arent the pretty ones so they dont sell.
2. if you saw a tank with 4-5 males and ones really dark- look close its probley not a female either, the lower male will darken to look like a female in a way to divert aggression.

It took me a year of searching to find the female I had- then she had !ONE SPAWN! then she died on me!!!!Only one I have lose in the SOT since its been up-A week later, the breeder net...got a hole in it some how...and the Fry ate the Fry....Thats why i know have a dozen 10gs just for fry....and I am on the hunt again to find a female...

Go to fish auctions... Our last one just made it so that everyone on the club who wanted them should... (IE there were bags of these guys that wouldn't even sell for 1 buck.)
