We have a an electric catfish. He is now in our old lungfish tank ( he was put down by the vet as he had heart disease.....very rare apparently and the vet was going to right an article on it.

We like to keep these big boys on their own as they can be quite grumpy and they need their space and first dibs on the grub.

i cannot wait to my little breakfast sausage gets to be this size. How long did it take for him to grow that big? how old was he in the picture?

One of the best electric catfish I have ever seen. How big is he exactly? There has been some debate on exactly how large they can get.

haha i just set up a tank just for him , a 60 gallon for now, couldnt risk him harming anything else, i saw him bit my asian aro :(
Oh No!

OMFG!

Say goodbye to your prized asian arowana. Electric Catfish shock fish when they see them as a threat or a food source. Expect sushi in a fornight.

He's exactly 28.5 inches inc tail and seems to be growing at approx 0.5 inches a month.
Not sure when he will stop growing but he's easy to measure as he often sits right at the front of the tank motionless! his tank is 7x2.5x2.5 ft soon to be increased in length to 9.5 ft. Hope this will contain him for life as i don't think i'll be putting him in the main 5000 gal tank, especially as i have to get in that tank to clean algae off the glass etc! The shock i got off him was quite severe and made my shoulder and elbow ache for most of that day.

We had a ~9 inch electric catfish about a year ago, which i wanted to measure so placed him in a 2 1/2 gallon with a multimeter in the water, fed him some roseys and got nothing. Tickling him with the multimeter probes registered max 32 volts and 2-3 milliamps (whereas ~60milliamps will stop a heart).

So I had to try it... it took a while, it was a very tolerant fish, the charge radiated up to my elbow, not pleasant, but not much more than our dogs' collar probes were in the shock zone of the electric fence. After an hour or so the feeling was gone completely. But twenty eight+ inches... lots of shock there!!

wait..so did we establish that it does hurt when the e cat shocks you? or what lol im curious
