I didn't always know either. I got one shortly after I found out they existed. I've only had one for 2-3 months.

i love my e-cat but e-cats should be by themselves in a species tank..they usually do not zap unless they feel threatened.

I thought that they would also zap just to "recharge" from time to time... Not really a E-anything fan... but I thought I read that they will release their charge in order to build it up again...Could be thinking of the eels though.

well all i know is mine is fat and lazy and loves his pellets.. i have guppys in his tank and he never bothers any of them.But they definitly are a species only tank fish since they have the potential ..
