Electric Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Egon, Here you go some new pics of Homer. There are also 2 pics of another ECat I have found online. I have been resurching the different kinds of electic cats. Maybe I am wrong but you will notice the difference in the pics that are attached. Homer has a shorter fatter head. And with the other ECat the head is more elongated with different coloring and a longer body. I belive that the ECats we normally see in our LFS are a dawf veritey. Not growning to the 3-4 foot range, but more in the 12-18 inch range. Check out this link. It sates that the Malapteruridae family includes two genera, Malapterurus and Paradoxoglanis with 19 species.

As far as the "shock" goes for ECats. I have read that at adult size they can produce 300-400 volts. I have not been shocked recently, but in the past Homer has shocked me while I was cleaning the tank. It is enough to make you jerk your arm out of the water. Its kinda like being shock by an outlet or light socket. You can feel the electricty run up you arm. But 3-400 volts is enough to knock a man out, better watch out for the big guys.

There show to be 8 described species of E Cats at this time according to planet catfish. The one listed and the majority of the ones for sale are Malapterus Electricus, the normal NON dwarf one. I've only seen 1-2 people on the forums with the dwarf variety and they were both from overseas.

When small try bloodworms they should work or live black worms.

More info can be found here

i'll have to try blackworms because he isn't interested in bloodworm. I think I might just have to starve him for a while. Thanks.

When I frist got Homer he was in a 20 gallon for about 2 months. He quickly out grew that. But the small tank realy helped out in the feeding. I just keep alot of feeder guppies in the tank. He seemed to be able to catch them with out much work. When he got a liltle bigger I went to small red worms and now night crawlers, goldfish, sliced chicken and beef and some times shrimp. I hand feed homer every thing. I'm sure alot of you guys do your fish the same way. Every time you go near the tank they think its time to eat.
