Electric Eel..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you guys for the tons of info. I'm sure you guys didn't just helped me but others too who have one here and aspiring to have one. I'll post that little bolt when he's stable with his small tank. He is just 6in long. I was informed that a big tank at his size would drown him.

This is an amazing species to keep. But, please, do NOT go cheap on the safety aspects of keeping this species. E eels produce 1 amp of current at 500-600 VDC. It takes as little as 0.001 amp to cause respiratory lockup and 0.003 amps to cause cardiac arrest.

Lights should be suspended over the tank and filter pumps/heaters should be in a house-grounded sump or canister filter.

I've seen some pics of Large E. Eel in a tank with only sponge filter as a filtration, would that work aswell?

I use hundreds of sponge filters. Each one is rated for up to 40 gallons. Sponges would work provided they're properly maintained.

BTW, there are XLarge sponge filters where one would work on a large aquarium. However, an air pump must be able to provide 0.25 cfm of constant air flow to keep these larger sponges working properly.

A big tank wouldn't be a drowning risk for a small e eel. The problem would be from tall tanks. E eels prefer to keep the end of their tails in the entrance to their burrows. So just keep the waterline shallow in whatever tank their kept in. The water level should be the e eel's total body length plus depth of the substrate.

Keep an eye out for anyone selling used coral frag or Tridacna clam tanks. I bought 2 with footprints of 96" x 48". The tank heights are 18" and 20". Ideal for large air-breathing bottom-dwellers.

I throw a hand full of salt in with my weekly water change. He seems to love it rolls around in the pile. the pet store gave me some powder that they said they got to help a open wound. it was some type of acid that helps cure blood poison in fish. but id keep asking around. of tank mates. I know i might get some backlash for this but i got two sail fin plecos both around one foot and two silver dollars. the silver dollars were defective one with no eye and the other is deformed. my lfs just gave them to me because they weren't selling. the plecos seem not to even care about the eel. they all want to share the same holes, burrows. i have even seen the pleco resting on top of the eel. they touch constantly probally over ten times an hour or more. The silver dollars dont even seem to notice the eel unless hes close. Then they run but ive seen them run from gold fish. There kind of neurotic all the time. They freak out when i feed, maintenance, or even walk by. just my experiences.
