personaly id never keep an animal that could killl you, one mistake and your gone. These knife fish can produce up to 650 volts, crazy when you consider that it only takes 100-300 volts to stop your heart.

Each to their own i guess, i have a mate that keeps gaboon vipers, i think its crazy and dangerouse but that me.

its an eel...not a knife fish.
 
One thing to consider is amount of shock varies directly with size. Little ones only zap you... and it's a controlled thing. Not like it's gonna shock you every time you stick your hand in the water. I've worked with a couple of them. 99% of the time they hide or lay in a dark spot where you can't see them. If you can find fish that won't fit in it's mouth or pick on it... then you are good. Medium sized SA cichlids work well.


That being said, I'd never suggest one for a a home tank.
