Hi Fellow Monsters,

Been a while since I have been on here, in fact I lost my password and have had to start again (: ..

I have been wondering for a long time what would happen if I get a powercut. Over here in the UK we have temperatures that, during the winter, would kill most fish. Now I have been considering buying a generator for back up but can find little info on one that would be suitable for a tank. To be honest I would need something that could keep the filter and heater going on two tanks.

Does anyone have a generator and if so what would I need to look for and how much should I spend.

With thanks,

Kit

I have the Honda eu2000i inverter generator. It is quiet and very efficient. It runs on straight unleaded gasoline and believe one tank will run 8 hours straight. It has an "eco" setting that will slow the engine down if you are drawing less current. They have different sizes available but the eu2000i is a 2000 watt max output. They do make a 1000 and 3000 model also. The eu2000i runs about $1000 out here. Good Luck.

I live just outside Chicago and have lost power a couple of times in winter with no backup plan and never had a problem. One occasion the weather was in th 40s and lost power for 2 days, twice for around 12 hours with outside temps below freezing. I keep general community as well as new world cichlids, not sure if your stock is more fragile or not.

We've decided on going with a whole house generator so we can be as comfortable as the fish in the event of an outage. We're in the process of installing it.
