Electrical Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with pretty much everything mentioned here. Just wanted to point out a few things that might help you out. Depending on the type of fish you’re keeping and what temp you keep your house at. You might be fine without heaters. If you keep your house at 70-72 and are keeping fish that are fine with that temp, then you could get by with a much smaller heater, or possibly none at all (best to have a few on standby to use with a generator in case of a power outage).

Lighting has been covered, so I recommend using LED’s.

Filtration is another area you can try to cut your wattage down. If you’re using a sump, then you might want to look at lower wattage pumps, such as the Jebao DCP series pumps. They are extremely power efficient. I run two of the 8000’s on my 220 at about 55-60% power and that equates to about 70 Watts combined. For your tank, I think you could easily be around the 150-200 watt range. Please try to give as a bit more info on the filtration and we can better understand your needs.

Sounds like an awesome tank! Good luck with the project!

Fish Tank Travis Fish Tank Travis I created a separate thread for planning the tank in the link below. I am trying to stay away from a sump so I have a closed system. Either go with HMF or Ultima. I am also building out TCO models so I can see how much it will cost me to get it up and running and then to maintain it. Happy to get any additional input but please put it in that thread it possible.

Most houses, run 3 wires at two grounds, one leg of 110 volt service. It is possible to double your watts, and stay within code, maybe,

You can run 2 legs of hot with one ground. On a 220 volt run. Use one wire you get 110, use both get 220.
Ask a licensed electrition, as it might save you some expense, if your out of watts, and don't have an easy crawl space to pull new wires from the breaker box.

I have my tanks on a dedicated circuit.

Since you are getting an electrician in, why don't you run a separate circuit in addition?

Just use one for filter and air pumps the normal household circuit for everything else (heater, lights, timers etc). So if something trips the circuit breaker, your filter will continue running.
