Electricity Bill

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We use to heat our appartment.. not our tanks.. saved alot on not running heaters.

Just be efficient, one great filter is typically more efficient than 10 crumy ones same with lights, don't use 6 24 inch lights but rather one or two good 48 inch lamps. Heaters, I prefer to use more larger heaters so that I don't have one 75 watt heater pulling full for 30 mins at a time but rather a 200 watt on for 5 mins at a time. (I don't have any newer heaters so this might be an outdated tactic.) I notice that OTB are more effecient for the GPH than most canisters etc. Just some thoughts, put your lights on timers.

An entry level system will run around $10k.

Your best bet is keeping you temps at the lowest appropriate temperature and if the tank is fish only, only use lights when you're in the room. You can also concentrate on the little things like turning your pc off if you not going to use it.

CFL bulbs. Turn off your AC

The only aquarium equipment that gets expensive to run is your heaters.

I agree as far as aquariums go. Heating and worse cooling an aquarium is very expensive. The fish can take natural swings in temperature, I have my heaters set to control at 75 degrees. They almost never go on. I do not cool the tanks in the summer. They get to almost 90 degrees. That's a 15 degree temperature swing in a years period. No issues. Of course I don't have the massive growth rates in the winter, feeding is cut to half maybe more LOL more cost savings :)

Call it a long term investment. How much do people pay for a hybrid car? You may say oh well they need to drive and gas is expensive, but the lights still need to come on and guess what? Electric is expensive too.

But the Biggest $$ for me is swapping all the regular light bulbs around the house with energy efficient ones. (The ones with florescent coils). Typically they run on less than a third of the wattage a regular bulbs uses.
