well i have one right now kinda fell in love with it it loves to hide keep it in a tank with soft substrate smooth rocks or freshwater sand that stuff he dose pack quite a shock if you piss hi off by acdent do recomend insolated protection when cleaning this tank but other then that the info is online

They get roughly 10 to 12 inches in captivity getting up to 360 volts roughly. They are really cool fish. Make sure you have hiding spots for em. They love to hide. Also, there isn't much that can go in the tank with em. trust me. I learned the hard way.

I actually picked one up yesterday from my lfs. I've been desperately searching for a gulper, but when I saw this little sausage link I couldn't help myself. He's only about 4" long right now, and I have him in my 90 gallon. I need to get him some more hiding spots, because right now he's curled up behind my sponge filter.

I also bought a pike cichlid at the same time. The pike is only about 3" long, but he's a voracious little guy. I'm HOPING that these two will happily grow larger together, but time will tell.

As for the electric cats attitude, He accepted a piece of raw shrimp from my hand the same day I added him to the tank. He's not thrilled with his lack of hiding places, but he's still a greedy catfish. I think he will prove to be an interesting fishy companion.

I love electric catfish! They have huge personalities and are fascinating to watch. They need a cave to hide in, and will usually stay hidden throughout the day, coming out to patrol at night. They are very hardy fish.

I pity any fish that gets put in a tank with an electric catfish... They might survive but from what I've seen fish don't enjoy getting shocked any more than we do, and in my experience ec's are pretty liberal when it comes to shocking anything they bump into. In a big tank it might be ok, though. People say that some synodontis catfish are able to co-exist with them pretty well. Your pike might be ok because both of them are pretty small and the tank is large, but pike cichlids are pretty fragile/easily stressed so if he gets shocked too many times you'll probably lose him.

10"-12"? Maybe for the dwarfs. I've seen electric cats over 2 feet.

Yeah. I was told he would grow to about 12" at my lfs, but after a little research (post purchase) I discovered how massive he will actually become. This became one of those
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it" purchases.

there are number of different species of electric catfish, and only the largest of them will reach massive sizes, the others don't grow much more than a foot. The largest species may be the one commonly found in pet stores, I'm not sure, but in general you can expect them to max out around a foot long in captivity. Captive ec's reaching several feet long is a rather extraordinary thing, afaik.
