eletric catfish

if you piss hi off by acdent do recomend insolated protection when cleaning this tank but other then that the info is online

Yes it can shock you, do you need insulated gloves etc? probably not. It's like one of those gag buzzer pens at small size and still not that bad even at 12", not something you'd want to experience over and over but tolerable. It's believed the E-Cat discharge weakens the fish a little which may or may not be true but I found that my E-Cat once accustomed to my presence in the tank for cleanings etc would venture extremely close to my hand and never shocked me. I hand fed it nightcrawlers frequently and it also fed well on frozen blood worms and market shrimp. The catfish decides if it wants to shock, it is not a full time thing and it also decides how bad it wants to shock you. I've tested this and confirmed it can vary the degree of the discharge.

10"-12"? Maybe for the dwarfs. I've seen electric cats over 2 feet.

^^ Malapterurus Electricus 36" Max length. I've got a pic at home of one this big from the wild. This is what about 99.9% of the ones in the trade are. The other is the dwarf variety, Malapterurus Microstoma, and I've only seen maybe 2 people keep these on the forums period. Both were in Asia. There are 8 confirmed species of E-Cats at the moment but I've only seen 2 in the trade.

I have one in a community cichlid tank with many mean fish and its fine.I have found that when u do a big water change the FREAK OUT!!!

This is a terrible idea and all around just plain dumb. These are not meant to be mixed with other fish aside from Synodontis catfish. If you don't believe me, wait and see; The E-Cat will eventually shock and kill the other fish the first time they cross the E-Cat in a way it doesn't appreciate.

As many have said, sand bottom with rock hiding places are preferred. I found my E-Cat to be very active both day and night and to co-exist with Synodontis Flavitaeniatus and Synodontis Multipunctatus just fine for over a year, I tried a native fish in that same tank as a test fish...it didn't make it 24hrs before the E-cat killed it.

If you want more information about them check here -> http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=109 or search my old threads about Jimmy the E-Cat.

Great info Trent. I put my Senegal bichirs "baby cave" in the catfishes tank and he went right in. Sucks that he will grow much too large for my tank though. I'll just have to keep an eye on my pike cichlid as they grow, to make sure the E cat isn't stressing him out.

This electric catfish I believe is a Malapterurus macrochir

http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=2081

And not the common Malapterurus electricus

As far as people saying that Malapterurus electricus will typically only reach 12" in captivity I would have to disagree. I have had 2 M. electricus in the past. One reaching 19" and the other 17". You need to give this guy a varied diet. They will tend to focus on one food. My first one would only eat earth worms and nothing else. Start right now feeding different foods. Shrimp, white fish, worms, blood worms, super worms, and if you can a pellet food. I was never able to get mine to take prepared foods. Give this guy pristine water condition just as you would with any other fish. Tank mates are considered a nono. But many people have had good success with tank mates. I did not. I would pick tank mates early like right now and give it a try. My last M.electricus killed a red hook SD more that 4 times his size. The shook stuns the fish. Some will recover from it some will not. Tank size should be as big as you can get. Give this guy a cave, but make sure to avoid sharp edges. Especially when it gets bigger. They tend to scrape themselves being as they have poor eye sight.

Well, it happened. I left town for my best friends Bachelor party this weekend. When I got home, ran down to check on my fish (because my wife is not very fond of this particular hobby, and they were left in her care) and sure enough, my pike cichlid is gone. Greedy fat catfish..... I'm not putting anything else in there with him now.

One positive thing has resulted from Link (my e. cat) being the only fish in his tank: he's started eating from my hand now. For some reason, he wasn't comfortable doing that initially.

It's sad that I no longer get to hand feed my aggressive little pike cichlid (which I never actually identified), but at least I get to bond more with my fat catfish.

saw some e. cats in the lfs today, had to engage myself in an epic battle to persuade myself not to buy one, for the sake of my hoplo catfish and spotted raphael catfish who i'm sure would not enjoy getting shocked periodically. As much as I wanted to believe that after the ecat settled in and got used to the other catfish he wouldn't shock them much or at all after that... but i decided not to risk putting my other cats through torture. The temptation was severe though, electric catfish are probably my favorite fish...
