Elk Antler in tank = BAD idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yet oddball if the antlers were sealed after boiling as I suggested, there would be no way for them to decompose :)

Old weathed antlers might be alright to put in a tank, but even a very dry antler, like other bones, will have a large amount of collagen in addition to the mineral component. Collagen is made of proteins and bound to just rot if the anter is kept very wet.

True. Just have to realize that the buffering benefit of the antlers will be sacrificed as a result of the epoxy sealing.

my mistake oddball, you are correct i was refering to horns, to adress why they are filled with blood, when in velvet, the bones are fed by massive amounts of blood vesssels covered with hair, the nutrien rich blood is stored within the antler untill it is shed, then it slowly releases it into the earth, which is why antler is a favorite among rodents

Even if it worked, will still be poor taste just like skulls, sunken ships and all the other crap people are dumping in their tanks.

while I'm not a skull person, nor do I like human artifacts in my tanks, I don't see how antlers can be in poor taste. I have to believe that antlers are a normal part of pond/lake/stream ecosystems. antlers are shed every year. when better for them to drop than when the head is lowered over the water to drink?
in fact, especially when found, I'd think you could consider them a renewable tank resource.

Your point of view is original at best.....elk dropping antlers among arows, motoros and pbass? ....That's one well traveled elk.

It really didnt look like an antler...I had to tell people what it was....It went along with the theme on my place so thats why I did it. Prolly just leave it as it is

It goes with the theme of your place but goes against the theme of your tank. Just saying :D

Nice tank btw.

LOL...I'm not an artificial ornament guy but I don't mind a random skull here and there.Heck, there are sections of lakes in parts of Africa that are littered with skulls on the bottom and when I was keeping cichlids from that part of the world I tried to simulate that with my decor.....BTW Master B what size is this tank?
