EMERGANCY!! RED TAIL CATFISH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Substrate should be okay, albeit exceedingly rarely it can also become a problem. Some catfish appear stupid enough to swallow a bunch of gravel to the point of not being able to regurgitate it or pass it, but this seems like a one in a million case.

I didn’t know redtail catfish had barbs. Where I the barb of the catfish located?

Not barbs as such, more the pectoral fin and dorsal fin leading bones, a bugger in fish which are both too big and too small to handle safely.
A bit smaller and they can be easily handled in two hands and a bit bigger they know not to wriggle and thrash so much.

They swallow rocks & stones to help crush and grind up consumed bones and hard food objects in their stomach for easier digestion, much like birds do.

I've had 200mm cylindrical air stones take 3 - 4 weeks to be vomited back out. And bits of driftwood go right through and pooped out.

And fish use their mouths to touch & explore like we use fingers. Nothing wrong with them swallowing things but you can reduce sharp edged objects if your worried.

Use a bigger sized smooth net and cover up the eyes with a wet cloth next time. You can see when the fish is anxious and when it's relaxed. Just wait until it's relaxed before lifting out of water.

I catch with a silicon fish landing net and then scoop fish out of the landing net with a home made fish sock - black rip-stop nylon sheet. No bottom, for easy release. It doesn't absorb water and fish slide out.

Also, try to keep calm and relaxed yourself when moving fish. RTCs pick up on your energy.

~~~~~~~~~~
In fact: get excited (without moving) prior to feeding your RTC tank and you will see what I mean.
F fishdance Thank you for all this. Every time you write, I learn so much new. And I feel more appropriate too, as a rookie. Good for my humbleness.
TBTB: I didn't know this. Ours here are on bare bottoms. Do you have a reason to believe ours are endangered by not having rocks to swallow?
FD: I've had 200mm cylindrical air stones take 3 - 4 weeks to be vomited back out.
TBTB: Amazing. That long...
FD: Nothing wrong with them swallowing things but you can reduce sharp edged objects if your worried.
TBTB: Not quite that general. Several of our RTCs swallowed plastic plants in our prior life in the NY state, which passed into intestines and got stuck and killed them.
FD: Use a bigger sized smooth net and cover up the eyes with a wet cloth next time. You can see when the fish is anxious and when it's relaxed. Just wait until it's relaxed before lifting out of water.
TBTB: Are you saying fish can relax when caught and held against their will, only if the eyes are covered up? I cannot fathom this, but I am sure it is my inexperience.
TBTB: Do you have this black rip-stop nylon sheet fish sock photographed and discussed more in detail anywhere? I employ a similar technique but with a pillow case or a bed sheet. It sounds your way can be way easier.
FD: Also, try to keep calm and relaxed yourself when moving fish. RTCs pick up on your energy... In fact: get excited (without moving) prior to feeding your RTC tank and you will see what I mean.
TBTB: On the surface this seems bizarre :) But I believe you'd not state this lightly. So it is likely me. ... BTW, how do you get excited on-demand like that and while remaining motionless? Not that you need motion to get excited or the excitement translates into motion necessarily...
This is like the 5th thread I’ve seen on redtail catfish swallowing suction cups. Not anything else, only suction cups.
that’s ?? for sure!
