EMERGENCY. JD Seriously Ill

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hard to say based off the info given, but in a cycled aquarium usually should be 0, if anything nitrate would rise but the ammonia shouldn't go up unless something disturbs the bacteria population, or bioload is increased a bunch. Done anything like cleaning filter media lately? Or anything out of ordinary that would cause ammonia to be detectable?
Just cleaned the filter media with this change and ammonia levels before changing was only between 0 and .5.

Hmmm sounds like you have things under control (or you will after that water change). Sometimes fish struggle with internal problems we'll never be able to determine. I've had mystery casualties over the years. It could have some sort of organ problem etc.

This is always controversial but I'll post it anyway since you're desperate....try adding some aquarium salt to the tank. Some people on here will advise against it. But in safe doses it's fine for your fish and does repair fins and gills fast. I've had hit and miss results with it for swimming issues. Sometimes it helps my fish regain swimming ability and sometimes it doesn't do anything. It's worth a shot imo.
I’ve dosed with aquarium salt in this tank before to cure fin rot on my severum worked well, but i’m going to give the Dempsey a couple days see if the water change helps at all.

Things just took another turn for the worse he now is struggling to stay upright. losing his strength idk what to do I can’t watch him like this :’(933E35F9-A59D-4A00-ADA4-491E57B375CF.jpeg

Do I put it out of its misery it’s clearly on its last strings or do I give it a night to see if the water change helps...

I so torn he just got a burst of energy and is swimming a bit. I’m going to give him a shot overnight see if he pulls through. Prayers up

He’s lashing out now spasming almost. As if he’s fighting against something i’ve never seen this with a cichlid before dashing like. I’m thinking it’s got to be a neurological problem or an internal organ issue

I’ve just thought of this in a previous thread we’ve discussed what type of JD this was and a few people mentioned it could have some EBJD genes in it. I know for some reason EBJD ALWAYS die prematurely at about this size, so could that maybe the cause of mines imminent death? Could it be the EBJD genes?

I don't have an answer. I've had a lot of SA fish going back a long time, but not many CAs. I haven't had regular JDs, but I've had EBJDs and I agree, some that seem healthy and active can suddenly get sick for no discernible reason. Don't know whether there's any electric blue genes in yours, regular JDs can have blue spangles or even a dark blue body color, I associate electric blues with a lighter blue or silvery background color, almost like a photo negative of a JD, but it's also true a blue gene carrying EBJD doesn't look electric blue.

As I say, I'm just not an expert on regular JDs, and since I rarely get sick fish, not on an expert on fish diseases (with a couple of exceptions). But since no comments for a couple of days, I thought I'd say what I could. I agree with an earlier post, though-- while it's unusual, I've had the odd fish die for no discernible reason. When a previously healthy fish acts like you've described I assume an internal issue and sometimes try API General Cure and/or Kanamycin. It can be frustrating when there's no discernible cause, nothing seems to work, and all you can do is watch a fish you like go downhill...

Think the genetics of this fish could be partly the reason. Similar to flowerhorns but I think fh’s have more issues. Just don’t hear about it for other cichlids. If others like neutrino and eccelaekaj have jd/ebjd as described then it’s plausible. I assume all ebjd’s and regular jd’s are cb nowadays. Easily could be internal issue and can try kanamycin if still alive. I’m not sure it’ll help but worth a try. Get the water parameters controlled before adding meds. Can add some prime every 2 days if the water is still showing high numbers since kanamycin has a short dosing cycle. I’m guessing and assuming in this case. FYI i don’t keep cichlids normally and take it for what it’s worth. Best of luck.
