water changes and bump the heat water boils at 212f alcohol boils at 168.7f. There for it will evaporate first. I would also take off or keep open the glass lid while you are still around. (this is what i would do)

What temputure does fish boil at?

tank is 140gal

fish are as follows;

1x 14" Peacock Bass
1x 12" Peacock Bass
1x 16" Silver Arowana
1x 12" RTC
1x 10" Giant Gourami
1x 8" Motoro Stingray

Water change is in progress. Fish still acting and looking normal.

The smell has gone away.

I wouldn't think the small amount of alcohol in a thermometer would have any severe effects in a tank large enough to house Cichla. Definitely do a water change, but 150% seems like extreme overkill; I'd probably just change 50% and be done with it.

thanks for all the input everyone.

I think I may over reacted over this. In all my years of fish keeping, I have never had this happen.

You have helped me feel more relaxed about this, and I can sleep soundly tonight.

thanks for all you help and feedback :)

The tank should be fine. My big fish break thermometers all the time when I forget to take them out. Also I don't think mercury is really put in anything anymore that is a normal household type item.

The tiny amount of alcohol in that thermometer would dissipate almost immediately, mercury is no longer allowed in common thermometers. I'd worry more about your overstocking, although your excellent water change regime is probably what's saving you.

As already said, its alcohol. It is not that harmfl at all, since it is just a small amount. Do a regular waterchange. I wouldn't change too much water. That could be harmful too.
