Emergency!! thousands of spiral worms!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree w/ Madding.. I have these worms as well, not sure what they are technically called. I got them I think w/ some driftwood i put in my tank. they seem to be harmless and feed on uneaten food mainly ( seen them now on 'n off for months). I get spikes of these worms when I start feeding more pellets then live food. I think the pellet cloud from the fish chomping them up helps feed these worms.

I think pics of the worms would help better than the fish, and it doesn't sound like parasites but rather harmless worms that arise from low water quality or uneaten food particles. They might be coming from your filter, people often find barrels of them in there. It is disgusting but not harmful to the fish - just keep up water changes and salt and they should disappear.
I personally don't see any worms and agree with the above poster's advice. It sounds like planaria to me as well. Are they also on the lid of your tank or stuck to the glass where it's wet but not under water? Look like short white pieces of hair that swim erratically? Really sounds like planaria. Do water changes and vacuum more. It could also be in your filter if you have heavy build up in an hob I have seen them multiply and thrive in the muck of the media. The fish show no signs of parasitic attack either,at least from what I can see in y0our pictures and look healthy enough so just keep an eye on them and keep us updated.

I read an article from someone who said that certain brands of food also attract these more than others because of the ingredients in certain pellet food. That seems to go along with MonsterMinis post as well.

Good luck with it though!

I believe I have had these worms as well. They did no damage to any of my fish, and mostly appeared when I cleaned the filter. My salvini fry did not hesitate to eat the hell out of them!

The worm is identical to the spiral worm in this video that I found on You Tube

Planaria are those flatworms you cut in half and they grow into two. These are completely different.

I do regular water changes and have very little gravel, but there is a lot of **** in the sump when I checked. Thats probably the source. thanks for the input everybody Have a great weekend.
