OK I have had my trimac for about 6 years. I assume he was about 1 year old when I got him since he was about 3" and was not kept in the best conditions.

Ok The trimac I speak of is the guy in my avator. He hasn't eaten in about 1 week. I figured he was just not happy about something. Well today I noticed he sits near the top corner with his back out of the water. I notice his left eye seems swollen like its sticking out like popeye. Plus his mouth seems to always be open. He is not breathing heavy although his mouth is always open. Is this some kind of internal parasit maybe???

Please help I really don't want to loose this fish. Could this just be old age????? kind of young isn't it??? even if he's 7 thats not old. He has never even felt water with a nitrate higher than 15ppm. He has always been fed the best of the best. Someone help please:irked:

If it is popeye not in the parasitic sense, correct water quality should cure it, however depending on the cause if its a parasite, it may not be curable.
heres an article detailing popeye and its many causes, hope it helps

i know for sure there is nothing with water quality... I just checked ammo 0 trite 0 trate 10 temp 79.

No real idea what's wrong, but a big water change is probably a good first step. Have you done a w/c since he stopped eating? Maybe something foreign go into the water column... altho poisoning wouldn't make his eye bulge out, I don't think.

Try a massive w/c and add a bubbler on strong. Couldn't hurt, and may help if there's something in the water you can't test for.

Idk man... sorry to hear. GL

Is there any spots or growths on him that you havent noticed before anytihng at all like ulcers or small red spots around the throat and gills

Tuberculosis - The bacteria that cause fish TB is known as Mycobacteria marinum. Fish TB is not very contagious, and, as a result, if symptoms are noticed early it will not have an effect on the other fish in the aquarium. Symptoms include the following: loss of appetite, fish remains in seclusion and out of site, rapid breathing (respiration), eyes appear to be cloudy or "popping out," fish lies on its side near bottom of aquarium, stomach of fish appears to be sunken, white blotches on exterior, degraded and frayed fins

see i looked in to that as well and I don't think its that because some of the things don't match up. Like my guy is not sitting on the bottom he is actually just hanging out at the top with his back sticking out of the water. He normally allows me to touch him while feeding on the head but not like this. Like I can poke him on that part of water and he just sits there. I used to put my fingers near the glass and he would sit there chasing me from back and forth. Yesterday I was trying to do that right in front of his face and he didn't even move as if he was blind or something.

There is also no ulcers of any sort. Stomach is not pinched in its rather fat like usual. I dont know, I am gonna do 50%wc daily for a week and see how it goes.

my female hait was looking bad a couple days ago, she had gone from her normal chocolate black to a slimy grey (producing lots of slime).
I had had a heater crap out a few days before and the dropped temp more than 10 degrees overnight, lost over 40 of her fry. Saw ich spots on her 2 days later, funny I usually notice spots 1st.
Because the tank with its sumps is over 250 gals, I did a massive (over 50%)water change and over 48 hours dumped in @ 10lbs of rock salt. The new water I used was bath hot, wanted to slaughter any fee swimming tomites fast.
She finally looked good yesterday.
The hot, water changes and salt are almost always my 1st response.
But if it's mycobac the salt supposedly won't help, in fact I don't think there's a good remedy available, only time.
Hope all goes well.
