My landlord came to do an inspection on our place. So I had to hide my fish so we wouldn't lose our deposit. I had to empty his tank and make it look dry. So we put my dude Carlos in a cooler for a day. He has his water pretty nasty already in the cooler so I filled his tank back up with tap water and treated it. I also have dumped some of his water in the cooler in. Can I just put him back in his tank??

Did you keep the filter going in water? and most importantly the bacteria fed(by either putting food in the bucket with the filter or the filter with 'Carlos' as he deposited waste)? If not I believe you're going to have to re-cycle the tank :\

No, I had to just put Carlos in the cooler with an aerator running. So if I just put the water he is in now, back in the tank, it wont help? He will die if I put him in the fish tank? Oh he is an RTC

I believe RTC's are hardy but they produce alot of ammonia and in a tank that has no BB it won't be good. But then again a small tub with old water wasn't the ideal situations. I'd put the fish in the tank and do a WC in the morning. Then buy Stability and hope all goes well.

That's what I would do personally. It could die though, but there's not much else you can do when it's almost midnight.

The tank has tap water that has been treated. Its been cycling for about 3 hours now. I dumped some of the water he has been living in into the tank as well. I would think he should be better off in the tank then in the cooler.

i know you asked for help.. but im just suggesting that maybe a rtc isn't the right fish for you. if your landlord won't even let you have a tank, what are you going to do when it grows to be 3 ft?

We are moving out of this place soon and I have had him for a while. Carlos and I have a great relationship. I pet him, I play with him he is my homie. Im not getting rid of him. Just want to know if he will die if I put him back in his tank.

He will be better off in the tank than in a cooler that's for sure, so put him back in and hope for the best dude. Do daily water changes and get the stability stuff. Don't feed him very much for about a week to minimize waste in the tank.
