I don't use Biowheel filters for that reason. I don't have to worry about it. Aqua Clear for me.

Ditto. Less moving parts the better.

A slower rotation speed gives longer contact time with the water and still provides fresh air for the wet/dry bio-wheels. Giant versions of this type of filter (20' in dia.) have been in use in municipal water systems for 30 years. Marineland only adapted them for aquarium use.

Thank's nice info! I would like to find someplace that sells oversized bio-wheels, and make a diy setup on my pond with a couple of powerheads and some stratigicaly drilled pvc pipe. No need for 20' though:nilly:, Just wish I did:naughty: :D

I've had both of mine for over a year now and the speed hasn't changed much. They have slowed just a wee bit but unless you seen it from day one you'd never know the difference. Now my penguin 170...... rarely does it turn
I have even dabbed on some white petroleum jelly to grease the axial but that didn't help much.

The wheel actually simplifies things for me.A tank I have at work I just tell them,if the wheel is turning everythings ok.If the wheel stops call me.

I have 2 emp 400's with really hard water. They work just fine, but they do get some serious mineral deposits everywhere.

Yeah, mine work great, and my water is also very hard.

It also helps to occassionally remove the wheel and gently clean the axis points and sockets, for hard water build up try using white vinegar on a stiffer bristled brush.

Any one ever heard of putting an air bubbler under the filter pad? I read about in a couple places.

I have heard someone mention it, but I'm not exactly sure what it would do. Anybody???

I also heard putting the filter pads in the back(away from the wheels) and stuffing the rest of the chambers with pot scrubbers with the air bubbler under them. Supposed to increase the bio filtration or something. It sound's good. But then it may just be a waste of time. Hoping someone had tried it gotten some results.
