I have an emp 400, I have a layer of cut to fit bonded filter pad inside the reusable cartrege and another layer of BFP in front of that. It dose a good job at cleaning the water, however no matter what media I put in the silly thing it spits out bubbles (macro and micro). It has even made what looks like betta bubble nest right infront of the filters spillway. I cleen my tank diligantly and do large WC's every 3 days, and I have made sure the intake is seated properly and I cleaned the filter inside and out to no avail. Any ideas on what could be causeing this or how to fix it?

what exactly do you mean? how far dose the water fall? not far...about 3/4" if thats what you mean.

I keep the tank topped off...it cant go any higher its just the way the filter sits.

Just my opinion and from use, the Emperor 400 is garbage... The water pretty much trickled out of it and I highly doubt it was 400 GPH... Could have just been that the one I had was defective but I've heard other people say it's bad too...

Wanna shoot a short video of the filter running so I could compare what mine looked like? lol

I'm confused, but I've used these filters for years and have dismantled and fought with them at times. They only issues I've ever had and I have had a 250 for probably 6 or 7 years still running and two more recent 400's is clogging issues, because I do not use the intake cover. Maybe the spray bar is tilted too far up, or the spray bar or the intake needs to be more snuggly fit. Are the bubbles clean (if that makes sense), maybe they are not coming from the filter but just accumulating there.

I absolutely love my two Emp 400's I would buy 10 more if I had the dough! I don't see how it could be the filter making bubbles, I mean it's plastic with some filter pad inside. Have you dosed the tank with meds, anything at all. I've dosed tanks before with meds and the water will have lots of bubbles on the top.

No, no meds. I did however just bite the bullet tho....got my first FX5 today:headbang2 MAN that thing moves some water, so as soon as its all seeded up with BB (im guessing 4 weeks?) Im gonna ditch the 400. Thanks for the advice tho guys.

When I have seeded other tanks with BB using the emp 400 cartridges, I just took them out and floated them in the water and let the new filter run. There should be plenty of BB on rocks, sides of glass etc. plus the cartridges, that you won't have to wait 4 weeks. There's nothing wrong in doing this, I
m just saying though it won't take 4 weeks for the FX5 to get the BB.
