Does anybody have a problem with their Emp 400 making a buzzing or humming sound? I just noticed mine doing it recently. Normally the water splash doesn't bother me, but this is loud enough it bothers me when I'm trying to sleep.

Any suggestions on how to fix it/muffle the sound?

Yea, definitely clean the impeller and make sure there are no fibers/hairs stuck in it.

I have the same problem with mine. I have ever since I bought it so it may not be a matter of it being dirty. The filter just seems to take a while to build suction. I usually have problems with mine at cleaning time when the water level drops. I usually just run water directly into the top of the filter unit once the tank is close to being full. Sometimes it takes a while to get going, but it will eventually take off. Make sure the intake tube is good and snug where it seats at the impeller as well. Good luck.

Mine was noisy since the first day I got it. My Penguins are silent (also by Marineland).

I had one do this, but it's not constant. I found moving the intake deal (forcing it) around untill it stopped sometimes worked. Othertimes flexing the body of the filter helped. I really think they made an off batch of impellers because it sounds like its lightly touching the body of the filter or intake tube while it spins.
I'd file a warranty claim, marineland has great customer service.

I'll try cleaning the impeller out and see if that helps. I don't know why I didn't think to check it before. I did a quick once over just to see if there were any visible malfunctions, but I haven't had time to take it apart yet. I might just take it all apart and put it back together again to make sure it's not just a loose part, but I wanted to check and see if anybody else was having the same problem first.

Thanks for all the help guys!

I don't think the warranty is any good on it. It came with the tank I bought out of the classifieds. I couldn't even begin tell you how old it might be, but it's in pretty good condition.

Pull the intake and re-insert it. Mine makes noise usually after I take it apart for cleaning. When I pull the tube and re-start, the noise usually goes away
