Hey Everyone, I just Got 2 emperer 400's for my 125 and they come with these extension tubes for the intakes and they are too long and wont fit in my tank. would it be a problem if I cut them? and if not about how high off the gravel should I make them? thanks for any help, I just didnt want to make a $140.00 mistake.

No issue at all, cut away. I like my strainers about 4 inches up from the substrate.

:whoa: if you paid 140 bucks for two emp400s then the mistake has already been made. These are commonly found online for 45 to 50 bucks.

You can cut the tubes to whatever desired length you like. Within 4" of the gravel is good placement, unless you are using a very small diameter gravel or sand. The filter can be damaged by sand or small gravel if it will fit through the intake strainer, if this is case then go about 8 to 10" above the substrate.

i like mine as near the bottom as possibel if you are bare bottom or big cgravel your good. it helps suk up poo. if sand you will want a prefliter no matter what or youll have impellers tearin up. but ya cut away they are replaceable easy and cheap if you decide to change it.

Prefilter is a good choice (I have two Penguins that have issues because my lack of pre-filter) and would add another layer of mechanical filtration.

yea, i was so excited about my new tank I baught everything at once and then i found some online but oh well i got a really good deal on the tank, stand, hood, and lights all new for $450.00. but yea i have larger gravel. im gonna go grab the saw now. thanks for the help, ill let you guys know how it turns out
