I found some Emperor 400's on craigslist. They are $35 each. I really dont know anything about these filters...what tank size would one be good for and are they good quality?

I know they do 400 gallons per hour, so I would assume a good size tank right? Is this a good buy or pretty standard? It says they are hardly used.

from personal experience I would opt for AquaClears instead... I had emp 400's for a while and I have recent switched to AC110's and I think they are much better at stopping the crud and have a higher flow rate.

Oh and the emp 400's are rated for up to a 80gal but a 55gal is more realistic.

I have an Emperor 400 on my 75g. It does a decent job, but I would tend to agree with BushFishRox on this one. However, it's hard to beat that price.

I have an Emperor 400 on my 40g breeder, and one on my 29g and love them both. Just wish the cartages weren't as expensive as they are. If I were buying a new filter, Whisper Triad 60 is the route I'd go.

Interpretation: Look on line at DrsFosterandSmith to get a price, print it off, take that to PetSmart where you can get it as cheap as the FS price. (Years of teaching help interpret cryptic messages LOL)
