emperor 400 in a bedroom?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I do with an AC 110/500 whatever its' called now. I lived for over 5 years with an Emperor 400 and a real quiet, yet not as efficient Whisper 60. The splashing bothers me not, i actually find it somewhat relaxing, though that's only when the water level dips. The only time it has if some parts didn't sit right.

Careful with the berings holding the bio-wheels. Lost one and couldn't for the life of me find a replacement, then the bio wheel didn't sit right. When I finally found the correct part (thank you Big Al's online) the difference was huge and much, much more quieter than i had gotten used to. Been cool and fairly quiet going on 3years now.

I haven't tried a Canister in my bedroom but i'll agree they are much, much more quieter.

I had 2 emperor 400s on a 65g and my bedroom and they were really loud, but the impellers were kinda chewed up from sucking sand in because of my africans...

overall emperor 400s are gonna be louder because of the spraybar, so if you want completely quite I wouldn't use one.

Get penguin 350s if you want biowheels but less noise.

Really you'd be better off with a canister. With 3 rena xp3s on a 125g and the spraybars underwater it's completely silent. I've gotten paranoid that the filters weren't running before.

I have two emperor 400 and two canisters on my 125 tank. I like the Emperor design because it's a one piece unit meaning less chance of leaking versus the AC design. The emperors are not loud but you could hear some noises. There is some water noise and motor humming noise. It all depends on how much noise you can tolerate when sleeping. Here is what I plan to do in the future. I plan to run three canisters and pairing the outlet with the Magnum 350 Bio Wheel unit. Like everyone said if you want the least noise then Eheim and Rena XP 3 canisters are the way to go.
