I just got a used one off craigs list for $10 and I set it up on my 55g, with my fluval4 and its pretty loud... Its not the water stream its the mechanics inside. Is this just all emperors or should I take it apart and clean it?? And how would I go about doing that?

I replaced the impellers on both of mine and that isn't gonna guarantee the noise is gonna be eliminated or even reduced, but just maybe it will...it's a toss up.
Cleaning may help some, but that also not a guarantee. You just have to do your best to clean it, get parts for it (impeller) n still might end up deciding on a/c 110's eventually...I hear they're so quiet all you hear is the water running through, but don't know how true that is first hand.

I might break down and get a couple a/c 110's myself cuz this is a long term hobby...

I have a few that are loud but it's because they are 12 years old.
:popcorn::popcorn: I have mine for 10 years and still run silents. It all depends how you care for your filter.

Good advice. I am a light sleeper therefore I get annoy easily with noise. One of my was making noise when I bought it used. I hosed the entire housing off with a garden hose to get every grain of sand out. I have eliminated the noise issue by replacing the impellers. I would buy the AC if they start making them in brittle resistant plastic. For now, I will stick to my Emperors and love them. Here is a diagram of the parts so I hope it helps you on how to disassemble it.

Mine have been noisy in the past....carbon can get in places and damage the impeller. I replaced my impeller for I think $20. Clean the filter really well...take out the impeller and rinse down where it goes really well try to get some pressurized water in there and then put in new impeller...that's about all you can do I think. I have emperor 400 on my tanks although I hear a lot of good things about the AC 100 so I think I will try those in the future.

Mine was noisy out of the box, I only used it about three months before I swapped it for an AC110

Thanks guys! Yeah I might have to get the AC sometime soon but I couldn't turn down an emperor 400 for $10. I'm going to take it apart tomorrow and try to clean it. Thank FishNCash for that diagram!!! I didn't want to go pulling on things and break anything. Thanks everyone, I love MFK :]
