Hob filters should always be filled with water before starting them. And when you plug it in keep putting water in til it runs on its own shouldnt take more than 30 seconds

For anyone following this thread, Jay88 lives in Australia and bought his filters from the U.S.

Jay88, I hope you did not plug that filter into the power source without getting the proper power adapter first!!! You need an adapter to convert from 240V 50hz to 120V 60hz in order to operate the filter properly.

Also, please read the instructions to initially fill the filter with water BEFORE plugging the cord into the PROPER power source.

Yes the emperor filters need to be "primed" with water in thefilter first. Iv only come across a few filters hat dont need priming, but the emperor series is not one of them.

sometimes, AFTER you put the water in the back of a hang on back power filter you need to take a pencil and spin the impellor blade a bit to get the magnetic field to let it spin. then you put the lift tube back in as it is spinning in its box of water. are you plugged into a proper power source? also, I have had to reverse the plug sometimes, i.e. flip it over.
