you can put whatever you want in it. Filter floss works well.
I've got a penguin 200, and I don't use the biowheel. Its an idiotic design; the water flowing down into the tank is smooth and quiet without the wheel, but if I put it on it disrupts the flow and makes it really noisy, regardless of how high the tank is filled.
