If you have a sponge filter to fit it use it in front of the regular filter, my filters last a lot longer that way .

I use precut pads between the two halves of the gray media container. I have both precut and bulk pads.

could use a cell pore cartridge for the emperor 400

After I originally posted this, I decided to just reuse the original filter
cartriage. The carbon no longer works but the filter pads still catches
dirt and I just scrub the filter with some thick gauze to clean them
every month.
