check the chart out on this page http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/filtration/l/aa071603.htm

lava rock only has a 16 compared the the pot scrubber's 370 :eek:

Notice your chart does not have "Biomax" ceramic rings. "Ehfisubstrat or Seachems "matrix". This is because you chart is for media in a wet/dry trickle filter. Who uses lava rock anyhow:screwy:

This is from Seachems website;
http://www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/Matrix.html

Matrix™ is a highly porous media designed to provide exceptionally efficient biofiltration for single site removal of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate from freshwater, marine, and reef aquaria. Each liter of Matrix™ provides over 160,000 cm2 (170 sq. ft.) of surface, equivalent to over 40 L (10 gallons) of typical plastic ball media!

So you get 370 sq. ft of surface with 1 cubic foot of pot scrubbies or you get 170sq. ft per liter of matrix. So you decide which is better.:)

Oh... by the way there are 28.3 liters in a cubic foot:WHOA:

And here's marinelands claims for there bio wheel; http://www.terrificpets.com/pet_supplies/fish/filters/bio-wheel/3353.asp

Each seven inch wide Bio-Wheel is constructed of specially pleated, super-dense fiber and contains 9.39 miles of surface area for beneficial bacterial growth.

I don't think this chart is accurate........Nylon pot scrubers!!c'mon,the fibers are smooth,yeah they might be in a big ball so it looks like somthing can latch on but the fibers are smooth,no pores!!!! That chart didn't even have ceramic!!! See,now ceramic has pores........even thos ebio-balls,there smooth!!!!1if they were pitted (full of small holes) then i could see them working,but there smooth too!!!!

well the nylon pot scrubbers seem to work for me. i have 3 filters filled with them, and on every tank, it provides enough bio filtration for my ammonia and nitrites to stay at 0 all the time.

Smooth doesn't have much to do with bb. Although the scrubbers don't have holes, they are made of extremely fine nylon.

On my 150 i have two ac and a powerhead and sponge and my water is clear.(getting a wet dry soon to add on) My dad has 2 emps on his 180 and a fx5 and his water is cloudy and green. But thats because he wasnt doin enuff water changes from the start and was adding to many fish to fast, so his filters are playing catch up right now.

Take everyones opinions and go with what you think is best for you and your tank.
Heres my .02

I run 2 Emp 400's and a FX5 on my 150, I am either going to stuff my Emp's with pot scrubbies just for added help or get a wet/dry I just have to see if one will fit in my stand :D

so are you trying to say bio balls dont work, even though everyone uses them in Wet/Dry filters?
