I have questions, instead of using the slots with carbon, what should I replace with it or can I just fill the slots with some sort of bio media? Is the carbon also really needed?

carbons not needed. what slots are you talking about? the grey cartriges? You could fill the container with ceramic rings or any other type of bio media.

I put sponge filter in mine...

Yeah, I'm talking about the grey slots. So I can just ditch the carbon and get the ceramic rings and put it inside the grey slot? Can you show me which kind, I'll get the ceramic rings then, instead of getting carbon. Are you also sure that it'll fit? Thanks guys.

I use double filters in my Emperor 400. In other words, two filters on each side.

I use Ehfisubstrat Pro in both sides with a cut to fit filter pads in the middle for some mechanical filtration(and easy if i need to rinse one side).

i've been rinsing the same cartridge for almost a year lol

I just got a marineland 350. One side I use two cartridges, and the other side I filled with ceramic rings and a top layer of sponge pad.

It seems like the water flow flows from top into the chamber, so I am not sure if all the ceramic rings are receiving the water flow/exchange.

p.s. first I got the tetratec 300 it was such a piece of crap that I had to replace it with marineland 350.
