I just bought a used Aquaclear 500 for $20. How good is this filter? I will be using it on a 75gallon tank.
great deal.
that should be running your system fine.

I have kept/used both these filters... both are good well designed HOB power filters. :)

Personally, I like/prefer the Aquaclear a bit more better... good strong output, able to control output (higer/lower), can utilize media space/chamber much more effectively, compared to the Emperor's cartridge slot, also cheaper to maintain (media cartridge/foam replacements) as well. Also, I think Aquaclear uses less wattage/amps than the Emperor (less electricity).

Though I do like Emperor's material better... much more durable than Aquaclear's plastic... it tends to break or crack much more easier than Marineland. But all in all, both are good all-around filters. It's all preference. :headbang2

PhullTank57 hit it right on the nose, it is all really a matter of preference. I have both aswell, and I like them pretty much equally, that is why I have mulitples of each.

own both AC500 is the best by far
only thing is the brittle plastic :swear:
i could run over my fluval 404 with a dump truck if you look at a AC wrong they crack

Never tried emperor but my new AC's are the bomb.

Since the emperor has those 2 huge biowheels going spinning so cool doing the wetdry thing! Would that not be the best since you get wetdry perfection or is the ac alot bigger area and you just put lots of stars and media and get the same effect as a biowheel? I am not sure which is better but i know wetdry is state of the art

aquaclear all the way

hehehe, i was wondering when we would settle this

niether?
Marineland Bio wheel, why spend the extra money for the EMP?
AC are very poplar as well, but I'll stick with my Marineland..

Marineland makes Emperor. Some pay more for more wire winds in the motor, less electricity used and so on.

There are tons of reasons, depends on who you ask.

I use Marineland / Penguin / Aquatech(biowheel mod) but that doesn't make either the 'Best'
