Emperor vs A/C owners of both only...

Once your tank is established you can pull all of your filters off and it will still process the waste biologically as long as you have water movement. People do it all the time when they have a disease outbreak and have to treat the tank. You just won't have a mechanical filter that's about it....

LMAO did you seriously just say that? Well you go ahead and do that then come back in a day or two and let us know what your water stats are.

aerobic bacteria need water movement and/or an airpump to break the waters surface for oxygen exchange. If there's no water movement to break the waters surface the anaerobic bacteria will take over...either way you're gonna have bacteria. The key thing here is to keep it balanced between the two bacterias.

I just told you...people do it all the time out of necessity

The only time I could see this working is if your tank is heavily planted because then the plants would consume the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

I have 3 emperors and 4 ac 110s running now. Both are quiet and do the job.For those of you that think one makes more noise than the other, break out the owners manual, you are doing something wrong. If water moving noise is the issue, snakes or hamsters may be a better choice.;)
The emperors are more likely to restart without help after a waterchange, the 110s often needs some water poured in to get it going.
The emperor is more solidly built, the ac plastic housing is a more fragile plastic. Not really an issue,it hangs behind the tank, its not an atv.
The main problem I have with the ac is the cheap little plastic foot that keeps it aligned. If something knocks it off the filter will spill water on the floor.
Ive modified my emperors to use quilt batting and sponges so Im not buying the expensive replacement pads.

What would I buy next?Either. Whichever I could get a better deal on next time I need filters.Like I said both are quiet and do the job.

mines the exact opposite LOL....I always have to pour like three cups of water in the emperor, or else it will make the horrid dry sucking noise for far too long before creating the suction, and the AC starts right up

but neither have broken on nor given me any serious problems, just personal preference:A/C mostly due to simplicity

i agree w cichlidian1. i have both an ac110 and emp400 and when the water level falls below the intake on the emperor, i have to fill and refill while the filter is priming, which seems to take forever, while the ac110's stronger suction power seems to prime much much faster.

in terms of noise, my ac110 seems to be inconsistent during restarts when i turn the filter off for feeding BBS. sometime, the motor makes a lot of noise and sometimes, it's more quiet than my emp400, but overall, i would say my emp400 is much more quiet than my ac110.

i do have to agree that the ac110's simplicity is hard to beat, but 1 downside as mentioned is that the case is made of a more fragile type of plastic (doesn't seem to contain nylon as the emp400s), thus can crack if mishandled. i assume this is why they sell replacement cases for ac's, but i don't think this is so for the emps.

i also agree that the ac's flow is far superior, but as also mentioned, it seems that the water seems to flow over the media rather than through. subsequently, it seems that my ac110's flow is less hampered over time than my emp400. i guess this means that ultimately, my emp400 is filtering and trapping more particulates in the water than my ac110?

i'm actually debating the merits of both at the moment, as i'm looking for another filter.

there's a great deal on ac70's right now for $20 each on bigal's so i'm leaning more towards getting more ac's.

i guess if money wasn't an issue, i would get an ac110 and save on media costs over the life of the filter...

one issue with the AC70's and any of the smaller AC's is that the impeller/impeller chamber is small. which means they gum up easily.

so, after a power outage, you often have to give the impeller a 'flick' with your finger to get it going.

you never had to do with with the 110 size. the extra space and magnetic power makes it go every time.

stick with the AC110's if you can.

this guy basically sums it up. in my case , i use the emperor since i like the water agitation it creates, specially with t5ho lighting, it makes a cool shaddow effect on your fishes, but thats just me

black color also matches my livingroom, i like the black theme on tanks....

oh and the biowheel looks cool. whenever i show my firends, they think it's a new technology haha !:headbang2
