Twitter search suggestions promoted right-wing smear that attack against Jussie Smollett was a hoax

"Anti-queer violence has been rising considerably, and the most recent FBI data shows that Black people are the most frequent victims of hate crimes. However, soon after TMZ’s initial report of Smollett’s attack, some right-wing media figures immediately started pushing that it was a hoax, before any further details were known."

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem

Great. The problem is lying to push an agenda.

It's not inconceivable for someone to make a false report. It's better not to jump to conclusions and promote smearing someone's attack as "fake" until there is proof.

People are jumping to conclusions because they've seen how many of these stories turn out to be hoaxes. Hoaxes for what? To smear others. Deny it.

Reality is that for every crime that turns out to be a hoax, there are many, many crimes against people like Mr. Smollett that are legitimate. According to the report I linked above: "However, in just August of 2017, NCAVP recorded the highest number of anti-LGBTQ homicides in our 20-year history of tracking this information, and decided to release a mid year report to raise awareness of this striking increase."

Using the odd-example of a hoax to paint all people who are the victims of hate crime as fakers denies that there is a big - and growing - problem and denigrates the many, many legitimate victims.

But that's, of course, the point for many.

People are jumping to conclusions because they've seen how many of these stories turn out to be hoaxes. Hoaxes for what? To smear others. Deny it.
